Re: Train sets!
Lately? Or not many in general. That old one is a rare sight nowadays and that turntable and the 89' flat is common but not with the containers on it.
Re: Train sets!
very seldom are containers carried by flatcar today, that's why, but the 89' flat has not disappeared completely, it is used for carrying rails, autos, or long loads, for general purpose applications

Re: Train sets!
You might find it interesting to know that the dome car in the passenger train was owned by my father when he was a kid (and that was back in the 1950's and 1960's). This makes it almost as old as him. Aside from the steam locomotives (which were bought by my dad), everything else are kits that myself and my twin bro have collected/purchased over the years. Unfortunately a great deal of the items we have are rare now, as the norm with model trains nowadays is ready-to-run (which takes the fun out of model railroading in my opinion, but such is out of my hands).

Re: Train sets!
I know right, you guys have the most advanced train set I have ever seen (personally by someone I know). I and my grand father also put our train set together by hand. We never used those ready made box sets!
Re: Train sets!
the equipment is pre-assembeled now, but a lot of the ones that TigerTankFan and I started with had to be assembled before running, except for the tracks, they had to be built yourself.

Which is a major shame
Re: Train sets!
the fun part was building the freight car or passenger car, model railroading is still quite fun, but with the Ready To Run element, some of the fun has been taken away.

Re: Train sets!
I know, but that is today's society for you! They just want stuff it in their basement and make it go in circles once a month.
So how is progress coming on your train set? Any progress since the last time?

Re: Train sets!
Still not as fun as building your set yourself.

Re: Train sets!
the fun is in designing and building the setup, as is building the equipment, but the fun is still there even if the equipment is no longer made as kits to assemble yourself
