The future of radio [Discussion/debate]?

Hello,

I am creating this thread, because I think this is an interesting subject to have a discussion and/or debate on. Radio is a constantly evolving industry; with technology growing and becoming more portable, advanced and effeicient, one must begin to wonder how this effects radio. With the constant opening of internet radio stations and the internet becoming more widely available across the world and more and more devices being able to connect to the web, one must wonder what the fate of Radio, both AM and FM lies, will internet radio someday take the place of actual AM/FM Radio? I mean there are millions of free to listen to internet radio stations out there. They are cheaper to run, can be heard anywhere in the world (with internet access). Which is where Fm and Am radio suffer and is really un changeable.


So, with all of that said, where does the future (and fate) of radio lie? With whom does it lie? These are things that can be discussed and debated here. It is unlikely that everyone will agree on exactly where the future of radio may lie, but it is nice to hear people's opinion and theories on where it may lie.

The future of radio.... I think that lies in Satellite Radio and Internet Radio.

not true, the standard radio will still be in use for a long time, as many will never be able to afford the rates of a satellite radio receiver.

Well you must also take account Internet Radio, online Radio, like BGRN, Star Fm and all those great stations we listen to. One day when cars get 100% internet in them, the FREE internet radio stations could pretty much put AM and FM Radio out of bussiness.

the local radio stations are free to listeners also

We are talking about the FUTURE. If there are millions of free internet radio stations you could listen to, from your car, why would WANT to the local radio station. See what I mean? It is quantity and quality in 1. With FM you can only get so many stations and chances are they will go in and out at some point. So why would i listen to that when I have thousands if not millions of free internet stations out there that I can listen to anywhere, no static no nothing. The future of radio.

people will not pay a subscription fee for anything if they can avoid it, so the normal radio will continue to exist.

Did you even read my post? Where do I mention anything about any kind of subscription?

what's being missed? regular over the air radio will always exist in some form, it will never fade away, people look for the free music any way they can get it.

What your missing is that I said FREE INTERNET RADIO in cars, I said nothing about satellite radio. Oh again it is the FUTURE k

That there is, I am an internet radio station, almost completely free to run, 100% free to listen to. We are also commerical free. I think Brandon was just saying that maybe in the future, people will be able to listen to free internet radio stations (like BGRN), from their vehicles, thus driving fm out of bussiness.

Alright then @1mtvfan what do you think is the future of radio then?

Radio stations will be still around. With the power of the internet they will be stream online on their official website for the radio station. It is also part of cable and satelitte that have radio stations with many genres to listen to. Radio will still be around in the future just it will be different to listen to it since there could be many different things happening in the future Radio will live on for a long time

Yeah but their doing it on their websites then its not fm or am anymore, now it is internet radio. I never said radio would go away, I just said it would evolve so there will no longer be FM AND AM Radio. Such evolution would make all us 'mediocre' internet rqdio stations on a more equal ground with the 'Pros'.

that's still open to debate, as the real issue is all of the advertising on the conventional radio airwaves

That is what this topic is for... Debates and thoughts. Though there really is not a right or wrong answer to this topic. It is the future we are discussing, you can not know what the future will be until it gets here. So until the meantime it can only predicted, debated and discussed mainly through personal opinion. However, I think the future of radio lies on the internet, I mean come on... Everything is heading that direction (as sad as it is, it is also true), so one day, the ALREADY evolving radio intdustry will one day be sharing space with BGRN and many other 'mediocre' stations, all fairly indepent, all offering more listening variety.

But thats depentent on the area too mtvfan, I think Brandon's point was that radio being on the internet means you can listen to any station ANYWHERE and you get tired of the radio intdustry playing music out (like I do) for the sakd of money, then there are plenty of privately owned and operated "amatuer" stations on the web to listen to as well ( like Brandon's BG Radio Network for example) that do not play it out.
